Popping in for the first time in forever. How goes it with all my f-listies these days? I hope you’re all well and happy, though I know life has a way of happening and not always in a good way. If such is the case, big hugs and I hope you’re hanging in there.

Wish I had something profound or even remotely interesting to say for my first post after such a long absence. But…yeah, not happening. It’s pretty much been work, work and more work. What’s left has been taken up mostly with sleeping and TV watching.

Speaking of TV watching, finally checked out Game of Thrones and am now thoroughly hooked. I haven’t read the books, so I don’t know what lies ahead. I find pretty much all of it enthralling, but the characters that most intrigue me are (in no particular order) Tyrion, Tywin, Jaime, Arya, Bran, Brienne, Daenerys, Varys and the Tyrells. I like Jon Snow, but I just haven’t been able to get into his storyline so far.

Also got a sampling of The Walking Dead during AMC’s marathon last month, so now that’s on my list of things to watch as soon as I can manage it. Hopefully before the new season starts in October.

I haven’t been writing anything outside of work. It’s the last thing I feel like doing by the time I get home. But I got inspired over the weekend and tackled a Spuffy plot bunny that’s been gathering dust for years. (Instead of finishing any of the almost-completed stories that have been languishing on my hard drive for ages. Go figure. ::sigh::) I’m over halfway done and still motivated, so I may actually wind up finishing and posting this one.

Not sure how long I’ll be around this time. But I’m off to read my f-list and do some catching up. I also have a hankering to read some good Spuffy fic. I know I’ve probably missed a Seasonal Spuffy or two. In the meantime, if anyone has any favorite fic recs, please let me know!

::extra big hugs to all::

Ohmigosh, there IS life outside of work! I’ve really got to get out of the office more. And not bring home work at night. And not go in on the weekends. ::sigh::

On the bright side…no work this weekend! Yay! See? I’m making a concerted effort.

Truthfully, it’s my own fault. I’m really good at what I do, but also really slow. Most of my coworkers seem to fly through their workload, albeit frequently at the expense of quality and/or accuracy. A rare few, however, are both fast and good and I hate them. (Okay, not really. But sometimes I want to hate them. Heh.) So I work on my own time to keep up with deadlines and everybody else.

So…is it bad that I spent the weekend doing absolutely nothing? Just sitting around watching TV or shutting off the TV and enjoying the silence. No chores, though I have so many things I really, really need to cross off the list. I did catch up with Last Resort, which I absolutely LOVE, and Revolution, which I’m also enjoying. And I liked Elementary, too.

I’ve been absent from LJ and Dreamwidth for the last two months, so I have no clue what I’ve missed. I’m sure there’s been quite a bit. I hope to get to play a little bit before I drop off the radar again, which I’m sure will happen. Hopefully later rather than sooner, but we’ll see.

In the meantime, glad to see you guys are still here and I sincerely hope life has been kind. If not, hugs all around.

Taking a momentary break from work I brought home that will keep me busy all weekend. A few weeks ago, I was told I'd been chosen for a special team to handle a special project over the course of two months. All very flattering, of course, except it's pretty much 24/7 and there have been a few nights when I haven't gone to bed at all. Not that it was required of me to work through the night, but while I'm good at what I do, I'm not as fast as a lot of people.

All of this to say that I haven't been able to see that much of the Olympics. Only bits and pieces here and there and periodic reports. But a huge YAY! to all the inspiring Olympians from around the world--not only the medalists, but all those who have represented their countries with honor and grace. Their commitment and abilities are truly amazing.

And a special whoo-hoo!!! to the American women, who apparently have been especially impressive during these games. I heard earlier today that if they were a country, they would be in third place in terms of gold medals.

Way to go, ladies.

I didn't join the Buffy fandom online until after the show ended, so I missed those infamous fandom wars. Not at all sorry about that.

I only recently started reading Mark Watches (off and on as I could) and enjoyed it. It was fun re-experiencing the show for the "first" time vicariously through Mark and those commenting. I usually didn't have time to read many of the comments but it seemed like the site had a refreshing tolerance to politely expressed opposing views.

Boy, was I ever wrong.

I checked in after the fact to find Fandom Armageddon had taken place while I wasn't looking. While I didn't agree with everything in his review of "Smashed," I didn’t think he was really anti-Spike or even anti-Spuffy, except for that particular aspect of Spuffy. And even if he had been, he's within his rights to feel that way. But what went down in the comments was something else entirely.

I stayed up late reading through the "Smashed" comments and was absolutely appalled. I saw bullying, gross overreaction and total intolerance in response to very reasonable posts, with Mark unfortunately fanning the flames. All because some people were quite politely expressing an interpretation of events that he and other like-minded posters didn't agree with. I suspect he was coming from a very emotional place, but that's when you need to take a deep breath, count to ten and remind yourself to treat others as you would have them treat you.

I feel disappointed. Which is silly, I guess. I don't know them. And they don't owe me anything except, perhaps, a general attempt at common decency toward fellow human beings, but that concept seems to have left the building during this flare-up. I wonder if it was ever truly there to begin with, considering Mark states at the beginning of his "Wrecked" review that he doesn't feel the need to apologize.

Really? ::shakes head sadly::

Yes, I'm certain there are crazy Spike/Spuffy fans who are reacting just as badly, and maybe those posts were never posted or already deleted when I got there. But the comments I did see were not at all out of line. And yet those with a differing, yet well-reasoned interpretation of Spike or Spuffy were bullied (or, in the case of some who had the courage to share intensely personal stories of past pain and trauma that broke my heart, they were completely ignored). Judging by the posts that Mark responded to, I have to say I find his definition of "extreme" rather…odd…not to mention suspect and more than a tad hypocritical.

Lord knows we can all "lose it" from time to time (hopefully regretting and apologizing for it afterwards). But I'm sorry…being harassed and threatened by a crazy fringe element does not make it okay to then turn around and do the same thing to those who are not harassing or threatening anyone. And then to feel you're justified in not apologizing…?

He's perfectly within his rights to ban anyone he wants to ban from his site for whatever reasons he chooses. But don't pretend that you're creating a "safe" environment for superior-minded people by doing so. Just make it easy and be honest and upfront: Anyone with differing opinions from his are simply not welcome there.

I'm sad to say my opinion of Mark and his more intolerant loyalists has gone down the toilet and seems unlikely to crawl back up the pipes. There's zero enjoyment left and I'm really bummed out about the whole thing. :-/

Ah well. My computer time is so limited, at least now I'll be spending it on more important things.

ETA: In all fairness, there were a couple of posts supporting Spike/Spuffy that I thought were unreasonable. But not horrific or deserving of the extreme response they received. In that case, just take the high road, ignore and move along since neither side is likely to change their views. Life is waaay too short for this.

I come bearing Spuffy fic. Or…ficlet. When I wrote the first few paragraphs, it was originally intended to be the beginning of a multi-part story. But then it sat around gathering dust bunnies and the comics went off in a different direction, making it most definitely AU.

Not knowing if and when I'd ever get it finished, I took the premise and went in a different direction myself. So like I said…ficlet! Hope you like!

Fic: Roomies (1/1)
Author: annapurna_2
Setting: AU Season 9 Comics
Rating: G
Word Count: 863
Summary: When Buffy makes Spike a proposition, she gets a bit more than she bargained for.

A while back when I was wrapping up Marking Time, I got stuck on the final part. To help break the block, I switched gears and started writing free-flow. Not sure why, but the first of this angsty fill-in-the-blanks ficlet was the result. Finally finished it, so hope you like…

Ficlet: Till the End (1/1)
Author: annapurna_2
Word Count: 1,281
Rating: An angsty G
Characters: Willow, Spike, Dawn
Setting: Post-Season 5's "The Gift"
Synopsis: A promise is a promise…

To the uber-kind person who nominated Marking Time for Best Pairing Conventional and Best Plot in the The Sunnydale Memorial Fanfiction Awards, please accept my most sincere thanks! It really means a lot. I've been so grateful for the kind nominations and awards in the past while it was still a WIP. But this is the first time the completed story has been nominated and it really means a lot. ::hearts you::

And major kudos to my fellow nominees!

If you've got some time and haven't done so, check out the nominees here and vote for your favorites...

Maybe it was the performances, maybe it was the script. Most likely both. But I found myself in the odd position of not caring that much about what happened to the two title characters. I wouldn't call their performances bad, just so-so and not emotionally compelling enough to draw me in. Chris Hemsworth was by far the better of the two, I think, but…I dunno. For some reason, I just wasn't feeling it.

Cut for vague and not-so-vague spoilers )

Overall, I'd say the movie was okay to good. Visually, it was very impressive. Loved the Enchanted Forest and the fairies, in particular.

I don't care to see it a second time and had I known in advance what my reaction to it would be, I'd have waited for DVD. Or I would have been okay with not seeing it, too. While I didn't consider it a waste of time or want my money back. I just shrugged and thought, "Eh…could have been worse."

annapurna_2: (Default)
Just noticed my previous post seems to be in two different fonts and I have no idea why. I went back in to edit it but I don't see a place to choose fonts. Oh well. ::scratches head::

Also, I almost gave myself a heart attack. I was trying to edit one of the categories in my Memories on LJ. I wanted to change Marking Time (WIP) to Marking Time (Completed) and wound up deleting the post containing the last chapter (and comments). Luckily, I still had the browser window open and was able to click back and add it back to my Memories. Whew! Mini crisis averted.

So I've learned a valuable lesson. Once you name a category in LJ Memories, you're stuck with it forever. Unless someone knows how to change it without deleting it or any of the entries. If so, please enlighten me! :-)

First off, don’t get me wrong…I like my new (-ish) PC, especially since it would’ve taken me a lot longer to get back online if I’d waited till I could save up enough to buy a Mac. (Pets PC.) But I do miss some of the quick-and-easy Mac features like click-and-drag screen shots (that grab only what I want to grab, not the whole screen) and iPhoto and a bunch of other stuff. Using print screen then pasting it into Paint is so cumbersome, and it seems to be an all-or-nothing proposition.

Ah well. Enough with the spoiled, ungrateful whining.

I’d like to sign up for the next round of

[community profile] seasonal_spuffy , but I won’t unless I can finally break through the block that’s holding up the second and final part of “I Never” (started this during the last round and just realized I never linked it here). That doesn’t give me much time, so I’ll probably sit this one out. (Or get reeeally motivated. Heh.)

I think, having finally finished “Marking Time”…AFTER SIX FREAKING YEARS…my subconscious mistakenly thinks I need another WIP. It’s probably rubbing its tiny hands together and bwa-ha-ha-ing in evil glee. And speaking of hands…on the one hand, it’s only a two-parter, so it could be worse. On the other hand, that makes it even more ridiculous that I haven't finished it. Ugh.

As for BtVS Season 9, I have some spoiler-type thoughts about the latest developments and reader responses to same.

I’m back! Okay, technically been back about a week, give or take. And I know I haven’t been missed since I’m rarely here anyway, so being absent is actually the norm for me. But I’ve been computer-deprived since my poor little laptop (apparently) died and went to laptop heaven and I’m really happy to be able to post to LJ/Dreamwidth again. Yay!

Although come to find out, my former laptop remains only mostly dead, rather than all dead, which means it’s still slightly alive. I actually cranked it up again the other day and even used it a bit and it did okay. Every time I think it’s finally gone for good…it surprises me. Go figure. Guess it’s hard to keep a good Mac down. Heh.

However, since I finally went out and bought a new/used laptop (a PC…gasp!), that’s what I’m on now. It’s lovely to actually have access to sites/videos I couldn’t previously access anymore because my operating system was too old and my browsers were no longer supported.

I’ve checked in on my f-list a couple of times but have mostly been rebuilding my bookmarks and getting things situated, etc. And also figuring out how to use a PC.

I visited my LJ profile page tonight and discovered I have some lovely new friends. Welcome! And I hope it’s okay if I friend you back!

If there's anyone who’s been patiently waiting for (and probably ready to give up on) the conclusion to one of my [community profile] seasonal_spuffy  offerings...“I Never”…I haven’t forgotten about it. I did save what I had and have been trying to finish it.

From a few things mentioned on my f-list, I think recent Season 9 developments make it a bit AU now, but ah well. Sorry it’s still not done. Been having trouble with it since way back when. I keep hoping to break through that wall and zip through what little is left to complete but no such luck yet.

I don’t know why I’m having such a hard time with it. Just don’t expect too much when I finally do post it, okay? I’m afraid it’s going to disappoint. ::sigh::

In the meantime, good vibes and best wishes to you all!

annapurna_2: (Default)
My poor laptop finally died...or so it seemed..and I haven't been online. But tonight I decided to try just one more time and viola! I did some quick backing up since I had started getting a little lazy about that. (I thought for sure I'd lost the second part of "I Never" so...whew!)

Have to head off to bed now. I'll check back in tomorrow if it starts up again. If not, I'll be back as soon as I get a new computer, which hopefully won't be too terribly long.

In the meantime, best wishes to all!

Well, I'm one of the lucky ones. I survived the layoffs this week when a lot of people didn't. It was clear why some were let go, but others...you just have to shake your head and wonder why them and not you? But I suspect this isn't the end of it. There's a lot of transition work to do right now, but eventually that will get done and with the changes taking place, I don't see us having enough work in the future to keep everyone on board.

So in a few months to a year or so, we may be doing this again. And the people left are really the cream of the crop. (I'm grateful to apparently be viewed in that same light since I'm still around. But next time, who knows?)

It's really hard. I'm happy to be employed (and very, very grateful for that), but many friends and people I admire can no longer say the same. In this economy, I'm worried for them. It's been a few years since the last big layoff and I know people who still haven't found work. Sending prayers and good wishes to all of you in similar situations, here and elsewhere.

And on a totally different subject, with my dad's cancer surgery and recovery (going well, thank you!) and the looming layoffs, I let his birthday slip up on me. Bad, me! So I'm heading over there for the rest of the weekend, which means I won't be finishing up and posting I Never, the rest of my [community profile] seasonal_spuffy  story (or reading and commenting on the other contributions) until next week or the following weekend. To anyone waiting, my apologies for the delay!

Take care, all. (And go, Texas Rangers! Heh.)

annapurna_2: (Default)

Well, it was actually after we got to the hospital and it wasn’t so funny. My dad, whose cancer has returned, was about to be wheeled into the operating room for a very complicated and high-risk surgery. But there was a slight problem with his EKG and his very conscientious anesthesiologist didn’t want to proceed without talking to his cardiologist.

The rest of the story... )

-------------------

On a totally separate note, I’m hoping to be a little more active on LJ (and DW) again, especially since I no longer have to devote any computer time I have to finishing up Marking Time. Yay! (Although I do need to get cracking on my [community profile] seasonal_spuffy ficlets. Heh.)

Sooo, with that in mind, please forgive a blanket Happy Birthday to all my f-listies whose birthdays I’ve missed while I’ve been largely MIA from LJ.

Also, I’m not sure what the next few weeks may bring, so please accept sincere belated September birthday wishes for the wonderful pfeifferpack, lillianmorgan, irvine_selphie and skylee, as well as early b-day wishes (also September) for the fabulous powerofthebook, wickedgillie, [personal profile] sophiabrooks , [personal profile] rebcake  and kathylovesspike.

And early October b-day wishes go to the equally fantastic [personal profile] elisi  and [personal profile] uisge_beatha .

I hope your days were and will be everything you want and more!

Whups. Forgot to post this to my Dreamwidth account.

So it’s been six years in the making, but it’s finally done. Cue the Snoopy Dance! Heh. Many thanks to those of you who have patiently awaited extremely sporadic updates and graciously left much-appreciated comments. Thanks also to those who have only recently discovered the story and offered your encouragement. All of you are what kept me going. I hope you find it worth the wait.

Still have some issues with this last chapter. I’ll reevaluate after some time has passed and maybe revise it a bit. Since I didn’t run this chapter through the beta process, any constructive criticism along those lines will be especially appreciated and most likely incorporated. Heh.

Speaking of the beta process, my deepest thanks to the always extraordinary [personal profile] pennydrdful for her exceptional beta work on several of the earlier chapters. They’re far better than they would have been without her contributions.

And last but not least…much love and many thanks to the most awesome and talented [personal profile] cindergal , without whose kink prompts this little tale never would have existed. Hope you enjoy your story.

Previous chapters can be found here.

Chapter 27 )

I lied...

You know how I said the final chapter of Marking Time had turned into two chapters and so I’d be back to post the last final, really and truly, absolutely finito chapter after a wee bit of tweaking?

::deep breath::

Yeah. Not so much.

It’s still true about the final chapter, but I was given an extra project at work, so I not only stayed late at the office yesterday and today, but I also brought work home last night and tonight. So the tweaking hasn’t happened yet.

(Also, I seem to be having a whole lot of trouble accessing LJ. Been trying quite a while to get this posted there. Not sure if the problem is LJ or my old laptop and/or outdated browsers. I also tried Sunday night to post Chapter 26 here on dreamwidth and had no luck, so we'll see if I fare any better with this.)

At any rate, I’m so excited to finish this story! I really, really want to get the last chapter posted. ::whine::

Ah well. If I can, I’ll get it posted later this week. But if not, right now Sunday is wide open! Heh.
annapurna_2: (Default)
Popping in for a quick (and late) drive-by update...

Remember three weeks ago when I posted the latest chapter of Marking Time and mentioned there was one final chapter to go? And how it was halfway written?

Well, it got all the way written. But then I read back over it and realized it was a bit of a mess. So I reworked it in hopes of making it marginally less of a mess and wound up with two chapters. Or you could call it a final chapter plus an epilogue.

At any rate, they're finally done! But I'm going to wait a day or two and read them over again before posting. I'm pretty proud of the story thus far (hopefully I'll continue to be when the time comes for me to sit down and read back over the whole enchilada). So the last thing I want is to muck it up right at the finish line.

I'm expecting company this weekend, so it will most likely be Sunday before I re-read and get them posted. But I'm so excited. And also a little sad. Silly, huh?
annapurna_2: (Default)

Here’s the latest installment of Marking Time, hot off the keyboard (the last bit anyway).  Don’t faint or anything, but that’s two chapters in one month! ::gasp::

Decided to forego sleep to get the silly thing finished. Now there’s only one more chapter to go! Yay! ::almost ready for the big Snoopy Dance::

The final chapter is halfway written. With luck, I hope to finish it up over the holiday weekend and get it posted early next week. ::fingers, toes, legs, arms and eyes crossed. oh, wait. that’s giving me a headache::

Once the story is done and posted, I hope to be a bit more present in LJ land. It’s mostly been a choice of writing or LJ-ing, and I’m such a pathetically sloooow writer. ::sob::.

For those who missed the last chapter, you can find it and a lengthy recap of previous chapters here.

Hope you enjoy! I’m off to bed…soooo sleepy…

Chapter 25 )

annapurna_2: (Default)
Okay, this was supposed to be the penultimate chapter of Marking Time. Thing is, it got a little long so I had to break it up into two parts. I hope to finish up the next part, which should be the new penultimate chapter, over the weekend so it’s ready to post next Sunday or Monday. After six long years, I’m sooooo close to wrapping this puppy up! ::valiantly resisting the Snoopy Dance::

In the meantime, it kicks off with the usual recap. Hope you enjoy!Chapter 24… )
annapurna_2: (Default)
Well, life happened and I didn't make it back on Free For All Day to post the other two ficlets I wrote for [livejournal.com profile] seasonal_spuffy . Which is just as well, really, since I'm not entirely satisfied with them. Wrote them both too fast. I'll set them aside for now while I finish up Marking Time (I'm thiiiiis close to finishing up the next-to-the-last chapter!) then I'll go back, do some polishing and post them.

Or...I could save them for the next round, like I did once before. Heh.

Hope all of you are doing well!
