So, is it true?
Jul. 21st, 2005 09:35 pmAre people really blasting JM because he's allegedly (since it's not officially confirmed yet) signed up for a role on Smallville?
Apparently, I don't frequent those boards and/or LJs, so I haven't seen it myself. Sorry to hear it, though.
On the other hand, can't say it really surprises me. Speculation seems to have been running rampant since the rumor broke, and that sort of thing tends to really build up excitement and anticipation. With all the high hopes expressed, a backlash of disappointment was pretty much a given. Sad, but perfectly human.
Personally, though, if I gave up on a favorite actor every time he/she made a questionable career choice or appeared in a movie/show I didn't care for, I might as well sell my TV then move to Antarctica where there aren't any movie theaters.
At least, not last I heard. Heh.
So am I thrilled that the secret project may be Smallville? Nope. But there are definitely some positive things about it.
1) I "fell in love" with JM for his phenomenal acting talent, as well as his uncanny ability to take what could have been a one-dimensional character in the hands of a lesser actor and turn him into one of the most fascinating fictional characters ever. I look forward to seeing him do the same thing again in the future, possibly even on Smallville.
2) JM back on my TV screen! Yay!
3) Steady paycheck for JM. The man has to make a living, and while we may recognize and appreciate his tremendous talent and screen presence, not everyone does. If so, he'd have at least four Emmies sitting on his mantelpiece.
4) Puts him in a better position for a Spike movie. The WB owns Smallville, so if concrete plans suddenly materialize for a Spike movie on the WB, the network would be willing to work around any scheduling conflicts. And what if it's all part of a package deal? "Hey! Come work for us on Smallville until we can get that Spike movie thing ironed out!" That way, he doesn't get tied up with something else in the meantime.
Okay, okay...not likely, I know. But, hey! It's within the realm of possibility. Heh.
Sorry. This isn't a high-traffic LJ and those of you who read this have probably seen it said better elsewhere. Maybe even said it yourself. Just needed to get that out there. :-)

Date: 2005-07-22 03:56 am (UTC)I was very indignant about it. I just couldn't see any good reason for Spike's character to be on Angel. I loved both shows dearly, and it just didn't fit for me. Despite how much I loved the character, I thought that his ending on BTVS was well-earned and appropriate.
I ranted about this for about a week I think, before my boyfriend turns to me and says "Don't you want the man to have a career? I mean, come on! if he doesn't work on Angel, really where else is gonna go?" I was forced to concede his point, as I really do think that JM is a wonderfully talented actor and didn't want he to go broke.
Apparantely my boyfriend was right. Without Angel, he really doesn't have anywhere else to go. So he just flutters around the WB like he's caught in Limb. Bobby Comfort notwithstanding.
Although, I have to admit, I shudder a bit a the thought of a Spike centered movie on the WB, Mainly as I don't trust anything that the WB points its hands in anymore. *shudders*

In truth, he's really at a disadvantage as far as more mainstream projects go. BtVS and AtS are his two highest-profile jobs, and TPTB in Hollywood seem fairly oblivious to both.
Plus, I don't think he went after anything during the pilot season, so if he plans to focus on TV, he's got to do something until they start casting again for new pilots and series regulars.
As for the WB and a Spike movie, I definitely understand having reservations. But I figure there's a 50/50 chance that I'll love it, and I'm willing to take that gamble!

Date: 2005-07-22 04:30 am (UTC)I do understand that, althought to be honest I'd rather see him move away from TV and towards movies. But he'd need one hell of a break for that to occur I think.
You're a braver woman then me!

Date: 2005-07-30 05:36 am (UTC)But what can I say? I'm greedy. I want more Spike, especially as the star of a story that's. All. About. Spike. ;-)
Awesome icon, btw!

Date: 2005-07-29 01:54 pm (UTC)Of course all those who feel JM should hold out for better roles COULD contribute financially (Patron system of the arts) and that way he can just wait forever for the offers.....hum..... The man needs to act and needs to make a living. Go James and good job Steve Himler IMHO (he got his client a paid job in a field with massive unemployment...even of the uber talented).
