Couldn't sleep. Thought I'd get online for a bit and came across the news that Steve Irwin was killed by a stingray while filming an underwater documentary. I've read several reports, most of them based on an AP story, but here are two Australian reports:

I don't know why I'm so shocked by this, considering the dangerous work he's known for, but I really am. I guess it's all the passion he had for life and wildlife. It's hard to imagine that snuffed out. I'm so sorry for his wife and children.

I think you're right. I caught a few old Croc Hunter specials that the Animal Planet aired in tribute earlier this week and got to see the footage of Argo's single-handed capture. It's just amazing all the close calls SI escaped only to go this way in a one-in-a-million accident.

You just never know.

But he's left an important legacy for all of us. Not only his conservation message, but also the passion and dedication with which he approached his work and his life.
