Couldn't sleep. Thought I'd get online for a bit and came across the news that Steve Irwin was killed by a stingray while filming an underwater documentary. I've read several reports, most of them based on an AP story, but here are two Australian reports:

Steve Irwin 'Crocodile Hunter' dead

Steve Irwin killed by stingray

I don't know why I'm so shocked by this, considering the dangerous work he's known for, but I really am. I guess it's all the passion he had for life and wildlife. It's hard to imagine that snuffed out. I'm so sorry for his wife and children.

I was so shocked when I saw the news this morning. Yes, he was known for dangerous work, but it seems that this was a tragic accident. A wildlife expert on TV said that nothing like this had happened with a stingray since the 1940's. Such a tragedy! My heart goes out to his wife and family.

Very, very tragic when you think of the family he left behind. All the more so because of the bizarre one-in-a-million aspect of it. But I will say one thing. He made his time count for something and he went out doing what he loved best. So there's definitely a bittersweet quality to his ending.

So sorry for the late reply. Work was uber busy this week. Hope you're doing well! Now I'm off to see if I can find reports from the QM! Squeeeee!

I know it was so sudden. I always thought Argo his saltwater bull croc would get him, and I think so did Argo.

I think you're right. I caught a few old Croc Hunter specials that the Animal Planet aired in tribute earlier this week and got to see the footage of Argo's single-handed capture. It's just amazing all the close calls SI escaped only to go this way in a one-in-a-million accident.

You just never know.

But he's left an important legacy for all of us. Not only his conservation message, but also the passion and dedication with which he approached his work and his life.
